I am the ghost of groovymother.com. Woooooo!

This is an old page from Rod Begbie's blog.

It only exists in an attempt to prevent linkrot. No new content will be added to this site, and links and images are liable to be broken. Check out begbie.com to find where I'm posting stuff these days.

Revealing Windows XP Mode for Windows 7

Windows 7 will ship with (effectively) a free copy of Virtual PC and license to run Windows XP. “Classic Mode”, if you will.

Vote for virtualization

I rely on virtual machines for testing Windows code — I cannot fathom how Mac developers can possibly be expected to deliver quality applications without snapshotting and rolling back OS images.

If you can read this…

…then my DNS-fu has worked, and you’re now hitting groovymother.com on its new server, a virtual Linux box running via Xen, hosted by VPSLink.com

For the last 6 years, all my sites have been hosted from my home, at the mercy of my (usually exceptionally-reliable) Speakeasy DSL connection. However, when the whims of BitTorrent take me, it can cause slowdowns, and virtual-server technology now means I can get root on a hosted server for less than the price of a cup of gin a day, so I’m putting my trust in a hosting company’s arms, and seeing how it works out.

(After signing up with VPSLink, I received a recommendation for Slicehost who offer similarly-priced services, so it’s good to know that switching shouldn’t be a problem if VPSLink turns out to suck balls for some reason)

VMware Fusion Overview

If you don’t already own Parallels Desktop, the new VMWare beta is great — I far prefer “Unity” to “Coherence” for mixing Windows apps on the OS X desktop. Only $40 if you buy before the official release at the end of August.

JPC - Computer Virtualization in Java

Java applet that emulates an x86 PC. Kind of interesting, but what’s really cool? They’re demoing it with lots of classic PC games — Prince of Persia, Commander Keen, Lemmings… If they had “Jones in the Fast Lane”, it’d be perfect!

Parallels Desktop New Coherence Feature

The latest beta of Parallels Desktop for OS X allows you to seamlessly display windows from, erm, Windows on your OSX desktop. This is very cool stuff. Makes me wish I had an Intel Mac to try it out on.
