Fascinatingly pessimistic view from the super-smart Michael Wolff (who, I didn’t know, edited AdWeek until last year, which lends extra weight to his concerns).
“Absent an earth-shaking idea, Facebook will look forward to slowing or declining growth in a tapped-out market, and ever-falling ad rates, both on the Web and (especially) in mobile. Facebook isn’t Google; it’s Yahoo or AOL.”
Fascinating article about the making of Apple’s iconic “1984” commercial.
“I’d like to shave a stoat.”
A series of superb car dealership commercials. My next car had better have a Trunk Monkey.
YouTube have launched their advertising model, and it doesn’t look too bad at all. Fifteen seconds into a clip, a little transparent-ish message pops up at the bottom of the video, which you can click on for more information (pausing your video), or close if you like. Ten seconds later, it fades away again.
Excellently skeptical article on companies’ presence in Second Life. “You might wonder what Coke is doing in such a place. “It had a lot to do with hype,” admits Michael Donnelly.”
Advertising agency creates their own girl group with the express purpose of pimping their clients’ products. Impressively cynical, even for an ad agency! (The BBC have said they won’t play the single any more)
The Scottsdale, AZ police department is running recruiting ads in the mens room at Fenway Park. I saw one last week, but really didn’t think it was an appropriate time to whip out my cellphone and take a photo.
This cracked me up when I saw it at Fenway last night. The Dunkin Donuts billboard above the bleachers is in Japanese (reportedly, it says “Welcome to Fenway Park”). Dice-K mania hits Dunks!
As we await Daisuke Matsuzaka’s first start as a Red Sox pitcher, here’s his new Nike advert playing in Japan. The shot of Wally the Green Monster in the middle is kind of disconcerting.
The Mac & PC on British TV are played by ace comedy double-act Mitchell & Webb. Genius!
It appears that the New Zealand advertising for Bose QuietComfort headphones is *considerably* different from the US and UK material.
Another series of Dunkin Donuts commercials featuring music by They Might Be Giants has started hitting the air. This is my current favourite.
That feeling you get from the “I’m a Mac” adverts that you like the PC more than the Mac? That’s what Apple want you to feel.
The Japanese versions of the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads. They’re entertainingly precise copies of the originals.
A massive collection of the “Wilkins and Wontkins” coffee commercials made by Jim Henson in the late 50s. Splendidly violent!
Cool new print adverts for BBC World. The theme is “News beyond your borders”. Took me a moment to “get” them.
Crikey! That splendidly-moustachioed fellow appearing in the DaimlerChrysler TV ads actually *is* the chairman of the board. I was sure he was an actor.
I’m loving the new Dunkin Donuts jingle by They Might Be Giants. “I’m slightly more efficient than I previously was” is possibly the most honest advertising slogan for coffee ever.
