BBC News - The strange virtual world of 4chan

The BBC does a (surprisingly accurate for the mainstream media) profile of 4chan.

“Another 4chan favourite is Pedobear, a harmless-looking ursoid cartoon character who, despite his loveable appearance… you get the idea.”

BBC - Changes to international pages

Genuinely bothersome news from Auntie Beeb. They’ve decided to stop letting people outside the US switch to viewing the News site from a UK focus. That was the whole reason why BBC News has been on my browser toolbar since 1998! Hoping this will be reversed.

BBC NEWS | 'Kill switch' dropped from Vista

“Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.” Alternatively, the fact that no-one *wants* Vista could be a factor.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Net giant supports open ID scheme

BBC covers Open ID. Shame that the number of places you can sign up for an Open ID now outnumbers the number of places you can *log in with one* by about 10 to 1.

BBC NEWS | Have Your Say: Where next for national identity?

Fascinating bitchfest on the BBC discussion site around Scottish folks not supporting England in international sporting events. Interestingly, most of the kneejerk racist comments are from the English, accusing Scots, amongst other things, of being “bitter miserable idiots”.

Fare comment! BBC interviews cabbie by mistake

This is just splendid in ways unimaginable. A cabdriver who was in the BBC’s reception area was rushed onto air by mistaken producers, thinking he was an internet expert to talk about the Apple vs. Apple case. Full marks to the bloke for struggling through the interview despite being clearly horrified!

BBC NEWS | Americas | Immigrants begin US boycott day

Damnit! Why didn’t I find out about this until I was already at my desk? I could totally have done with pulling a sickie, and pretending it was a political statement.

BBC NEWS | Judge creates own Da Vinci code

“The judge who presided over the failed Da Vinci Code plagiarism case at London’s High Court hid his own secret code in his written judgement.” Brilliant! I reckon it’s a Vigenère with “smithycode” as the offset, but I’m too lazy to test that theory.
